    A Brief History and Meaning

Reiki, which is pronounced Ray-key is a Japanese word meaning universal energy, an energy which is all around us. Eastern medicine has always recognised and worked with this energy, which flows through all living things and is vital to well-being. Known as ‘ki’ in Japan, ‘chi’ in China and ‘prana’ in India. Acupuncture, Tai chi, Yoga and many Martial Arts are also based on the free-flow of this energy in a person.

Reiki is a system of natural healing that uses this naturally occuring energy to heal disease. Practitioners use this energy or “ki” that is all around us and are able to pass it on to re-awaken the natural healing process in others by focusing the energy on the areas that it is most needed.

Reiki was discovered in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui in 1922. Usui discovered Reiki while fasting and preparing for death on Mt Kurama in Japan, where he went to find enlightenment while studying Zen Buddhism. One day after his third week of fasting on Mt Kurama, Usui felt a powerful shock in the centre of his brain, as if he was struck by lightening and become unconscious. Usui finally woke up after several hours and began to run down Mt Kurama back to his Zen master. Usui hurt his toe while running down Mt Kurama, he naturally put his hands over his toe and to his suprise he found that the pain subsided and the bleeding stopped. This was Usui’s first encounter with this new ability. He spent the rest of his life practicing and teaching Reiki. Usui named his method of treatment “心身 改善 臼井 靈氣 療法 – Shin Shin Kaizen Usui Reiki Ryoho”, meaning “Usui Reiki Treatment Method for Improvement of Body and Mind”.

Many years later Reiki was banned in Japan and anyone caught practicing without a Medical license were jailed. Due to this, Usui’s Reiki was thought to be all but lost in Japan, until a family came forward who had been practicing privately the original methods for over 65 years, they were the Yamaguchi family.

    Jikiden Reiki

Jikiden Reiki stems directly from Hayashi Sensei (who was one of Usui’s original twenty students). Chiyoko Yamaguchi was a direct student of Hayashi Sensei, she had been found to have been using the original teachings passed to her from Hayashi Sensei for over 65 years. Tadao Yamaguchi, Chiyoko’s son, also learned Reiki from his mother and together they founded the Jikiden Reiki Kenkyukai (Institute) and started teaching the original methods as taught by Usui and Hayashi Sensei many years previously. Tadao Yamaguchi now heads the Jikiden Reiki Kenkyukai who himself has had over 30 years of experience.

Jikiden means directly passed in Japanese, therefore Jikiden Reiki translates to directly passed Reiki. It is entirely free of Western influence. It differs to “Western” style Reiki in approach, attitude and ideas. A lot of people notice a real difference in the feel of Jikiden Reiki.

A Little Research On The Science Of Reiki

Independent research by Dr. Robert Becker and Dr. John Zimmerman during the 1980′s investigated what happens whilst people practice therapies like Reiki. They found that not only do the brain wave patterns of practitioner and receiver become synchronized in the alpha state, characteristic of deep relaxation and meditation, but they pulse in unison with the earth’s magnetic field, known as the Schuman Resonance. During these moments, the bio-magnetic field of the practitioners’ hands is at least 1000 times greater than normal, and not as a result of internal body current. Toni Bunnell (1997) suggests that the linking of energy fields between practitioner and earth allows the practitioner to draw on the ‘infinite energy source’ or ‘universal energy field’ via the Schuman Resonance. Prof. Paul Davies and Dr. John Gribben in The Matter Myth (1991), discuss the quantum physics view of a ‘living universe’ in which everything is connected in a ‘living web of interdependence’. All of this supports the subjective experience of ‘oneness’ and ‘expanded consciousness’ related by those who regularly receive or self-treat with Reiki.

Zimmerman (1990) in the USA and Seto (1992) in Japan further investigated the large pulsating bio-magnetic field that is emitted from the hands of energy practitioners whilst they work. They discovered that the pulses are in the same frequencies as brain waves, and sweep up and down from 0.3 – 30 Hz, focusing mostly in 7 – 8 Hz, alpha state. Independent medical research has shown that this range of frequencies will stimulate healing in the body, with specific frequencies being suitable for different tissues. For example, 2 Hz encourages nerve regeneration, 7Hz bone growth, 10Hz ligament mending, and 15 Hz capillary formation. Physiotherapy equipment based on these principles has been designed to aid soft tissue regeneration, and ultra sound technology is commonly used to clear clogged arteries and disintegrate kidney stones. Also, it has been known for many years that placing an electrical coil around a fracture that refuses to mend will stimulate bone growth and repair.

Becker explains that ‘brain waves’ are not confined to the brain but travel throughout the body via the perineural system, the sheaths of connective tissue surrounding all nerves. During treatment, these waves begin as relatively weak pulses in the thalamus of the practitioner’s brain, and gather cumulative strength as they flow to the peripheral nerves of the body including the hands. The same effect is mirrored in the person receiving treatment, and Becker suggests that it is this system more than any other, that regulates injury repair and system rebalance. This highlights one of the special features of Reiki (and similar therapies) – that both practitioner and client receive the benefits of a treatment, which makes it very efficient.

It is interesting to note that Dr. Becker carried out his study on world-wide array of cross-cultural subjects, and no matter what their belief systems or customs, or how opposed to each other their customs were, all tested the same. Part of Reiki’s growing popularity is that it does not impose a set of beliefs, and can therefore be used by people of any background and faith, or none at all. This neutrality makes it particularly appropriate to a medical or prison setting.

  • About Me

    Neil Thomas ニール トマス
Jikiden Reiki Shihan-Kaku, Chiropractor & Acupuncturist

I first became interested in the natural healing arts after being introduced to the Martial Art Ninjutsu, over fifteen years ago. Within Ninjutsu is an integration of Japanese medicine known as Amatsu and this ancient system of healing is thousands of years old. While studying Ninjutsu I have learnt a lot of this ancient Japanese medical system, which has given me a deeper understanding of the human body. Due to this experience, I decided to study further in the natural healing arts by undertaking a Doctor of Chiropractic degree and more recently a postgraduate Licentiate of Acupuncture (Lic. Ac). This experience has enabled a deeper understanding and appreciation of the great self-healing ability that we all possess, and that sometimes it needs a little help.

I originally trained in western Reiki, reaching my teacher level in early 2010. I retrained in Jikiden Reiki with Tadao Yamaguchi in July 2010 and with Dai-Shihan Rika Tanaka in October 2011. I am now a qualified Jikiden Reiki Shihan-Kaku and I am the only current Jikiden Reiki teacher in Wales.

The way in which I practice Reiki is unique in that I am able to integrate, if required, the use of acupuncture to aid deeper relaxation and calming of the body prior to or during a Reiki treatment. The combination of Eastern and Western treatment techniques creates a diverese natural healing method that is suitable for everyone.

Hayashi Sensei, Usui’s most famous student and teacher successfully integrated Reiki into his medical practice, I aim to do the same. As a Chiropractor I am able to implement Reiki in a much broader area of healthcare.

The aim of Jikiden Reiki seminars is to enable people to learn practical Reiki that has been proven by experience to be very effective – Tadao Sensei.

I started Jikiden Reiki Wales for this reason; as a foundation to teach seminars, contribute to the already increasing research into Reiki, to help spread this wonderfull and powerful healing art throughout the world and finally to help facilitate its transition from alternative to mainstream healthcare.

Please feel free to browse my website, if you have any questions relating to Jikiden Reiki or acupuncture, please don’t hesitate to contact me via the contact page.

  • Treatment

    FREE CONSULTATION

Due to my medical training, my scope of practice is greater than that of other regular Reiki practitioners. This means I have the ability to recognise serious underlying problems and treat them more effectively or provide further guidance, rest assured, you are in safe hands.

    Physical Treatment

Reiki can be used to treat any physical disease, injury or condition, from acute to chronic. Reiki has a long history of success in the treatment of many chronic conditions. Practitioners use the concept of Byosen which is felt in their hands, to find the problems in your body. For some 1-3 treatments is enough, however more chronic conditions will take longer.

Common physical conditions that we treat:

    • Cuts
    • Bruising
    • Bone fractures (once diagnosed and stabilized)
    • Acute burns
    • Muscle aches, sprains/strains
    • Stomach/abdominal pains (e.g. IBS, menses pains)
    • Headaches/migraines
    • Arthritis pain
    • Fatigue/lethergy
    • General illness
    • Immune system
    • Cancers* – Reiki is currently used in many NHS Hospices

    Reiki Massage

Reiki massage is a relaxing experience that incorporates massage into a Reiki treatment. The massage technique used is a general effleurage and petrissage technique. Effleurage is a light massage that warms up the muscles ready for a more deep and firm massage technique such as Petrissage. The combination of Reiki and massage results in a very relaxing healing experience that will leave you feeling loose and refreshed.

    Reiki & Acupuncture

Reiki can be combined with acupuncture to enhance relaxation and healing. Specific acupuncture points stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system which calms the body and reduces stress. Acupuncture can be used alongside the physicsal or emotional treatment.

    Psychological or Emotional Treatment

Reiki is not just effective in the treatment of physical disease but also in many common psychological conditions. Psychological or emotional treatments are a very effective way to help yourself through difficult times or issues. They can be used for anything from fears, stress and worry to depression, addictions and severe trauma. The number of treatments required will be different for everyone, and the more long-term the issue, generally the longer it takes to resolve, though usually some positive effects can be felt immediately.

Common psychological conditions that we treat:

    • Stress
    • Anxiety
    • Depression
    • Addiction
    • Phobias
    • Insomnia
    • Stubbornness
    • Concentration problems

Jikiden Reiki has demonstrated promising results in the treatment of cancer; whether it be for the side effects of cancer treatment or for pain management, Reiki can help. Reiki is also now used on the NHS and in many cancer hospices throughout the UK. Please contact us if you are unsure as to whether your complaint can be treated.

*We do not suggest that we can cure cancer, case studies have demonstrated that Reiki is effective in the treatment of cancer and its symptoms however there is no high quality research available as of yet.

  • Medical Acupuncture

    FREE ACUPUNCTURE CONSULTATION

Western Medical Acupuncture is now used by the NHS, as well as many other healthcare professionals. Medical Acupuncture integrates traditional and modern techniques into contemporary medical practice.

Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of medical treatment available today. This method in which fine needles are inserted into the skin had its origins in China several thousand years ago. It is known that when the needles are inserted into specific points in the body (Acupuncture points) chemical changes occur and the transmission of electrical impulses along nerves can be altered.

A number of needles may be inserted at each session and will be left in place for a specific amount of time. Many people find their treatment very relaxing. Treatments will be repeated at frequent intervals in the early stages and as a response is achieved the periods between treatments will be extended.

Medical acupuncture respects our contemporary understanding of the nervous system and pain while embracing the classical Chinese perception of a subtle circulation network of a vital force called qi. This hybrid acupuncture approach expresses the best of both worlds. Musculoskeletal problems have been shown to be the most frequently and successfully treated disorders; however, medical acupuncture is adaptable to most clinical practices and can be used either as the primary or a complementary treatment. The physician acupuncturist can creatively intervene in a spectrum of medical disorders from early disease manifestations to chronic organic or musculoskeletal lesions by activating the appropriate qi circulation.

Research suggests the most promising area for acupuncture is with conditions involving inflammation and pain. One study of hip and knee osteoarthritis, based on more than 700 patients found acupuncture can significantly lower pain levels, improve joint range of motion and quality of life. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) provides guidelines to the NHS on use of treatments and care of patients, and currently recommends acupuncture as a treatment option for a wide variety of conditions.

    Dry Needling

Dry needling is used by many physical therapists including chiropractors and osteopaths. This method of needling is used for muscular pain and tightness. The needles are inserted into trigger points within the muscle. Trigger points are tender areas within a muscle that are painful to touch and can sometimes refer pain to a specific area of the body. Dry needling results in instant muscle relaxation and pain relief.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), acupuncture has proven effective through clinical trials for the following conditions:

    • Adverse reactions to radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy
    • Allergic rhinitis (including hay fever)
    • Biliary colic

  • FAQ’s

    What does ‘Jikiden’ mean?…

Jikiden translates to directly passed or taught. Tadao Yamaguchi and his mother, Chiyoko, began to conduct the Jikiden Reiki Seminars because they wanted to show people the Reiki that Chiyoko learned directly from Hayashi sensei in the 1930s. Hayashi sensei was one of only 20 teachers created by Usui sensei. Therefore Jikiden Reiki is a direct replication of what Chiyoko Yamaguchi learned from Hayashi Sensei.

    I am a western Reiki practitioner/teacher, can i learn Jikiden Reiki?…

Yes you can, however you will be required to start from Shoden level (level one). This is beacuse Western Reiki is somewhat different to Jikiden Reiki and students are required to learn the original concepts and techniques as well as a very detailed history. Jikiden Reiki also cannot be mixed with other styles of Reiki.

What is the difference between western Reiki and Jikiden Reiki?…

This is quite a detailed answer…

Western Reiki stems from the teachings of Mrs Hawayo Takata, who was a student of Hayashi Sensei. This lineage is considered western and when it spread to the world the original teachings had somehow become changed. Mrs Takata did not start teaching until many years after she had been trained, this may account for the change in Reiki course contents, this would have been unintentional.

Jikiden Reiki is also from the lineage of Hayashi Sensei, however it is unchanged from the original training Usui gave Hayashi (Jikiden means directly passed). This is due to the dedication of the Yamaguchi family. Chiyoko Yamaguchi was a student of Hayashi Sensei, Tadao Yamaguchi, her son, was a student of his mother Chiyoko. Chiyoko Yamaguchi had been practicing from the age of 17, for a total of 65 years until she passed away in 2003. Together they decided to found the Jikiden Reiki Kenkyukai in order to teach and preserve the exact teachings of Usui and Hayashi Sensei.

    How are the degrees structured?…

Jikiden Reiki training is broken up into the following levels:

    Shoden
        • Level one (history and physical healing)
    Okuden
        • Level two (mental and distant healing)
    Shinpinden (three parts)
        • Shihan-Kaku (assisntant teacher)
        • Shihan (teacher)
        • Dai-Shihan (higher teacher)

Shihan-Kaku can teach Shoden level only, Shihan can teach both Shoden and Okuden, Dai-Shihan can teach up to Shihan-Kaku level. Only Tadao Yamaguchi (founder of Jikiden Reiki) can teach the Shihan level. This is traditional in Japan, that the head of the school can be the only one who teaches the higher levels, much like in many Martial Art schools. This lineage of Reiki is very strict in its traditions in order to keep the training authenticity.

How do i train to become a Jikiden Reiki Teacher?…

You must first study Shoden and Okuden levels. In order to progress to Shihan-Kaku you must also repeat Shoden and Okuden at least once in order to make sure you have grasped the contents of the seminar. This is also traditional in Japan. There are various other requirements to fulfil before being accepted onto the Shihan-Kaku course.

Are symbols used in Jikiden Reiki?…

Yes there are, however the ways of using them and thinking about them are quite different from Western style Reiki. In Jikiden Reiki they are called Shirushi and Jumon. The original concepts behind the symbols and mantras in Reiki were very clear and awareness of their meaning is important. This will be explained in greater detail during the seminar.

Do Jikiden Reiki Teachers use the title Master Teacher?…

No, we believe there is always room for improvement and therfore we do not use this title. Usui also did not call himself a Master, therfore to show respect, we also do not use the title.

How do i start Jikiden Reiki Training?…

Simply contact Neil at Jikiden Reiki Wales and an application form will be sent to you by email. Complete the form and send it back via email if you have a scanning facility, if not you can post it to the Jikiden Reiki Wales address. Once the application form has been received, along with a booking deposit, you will be booked on the next available seminar. A booking confirmation will be sent out to you along with any further details.

Does Jikiden Reiki contain any spiritual aspects?…

No, Jikiden Reiki does not include any spiritual teachings. Reiki originally did not include spiritual teachings in its curriculum, this was added at a later date when Reiki left Japan and spread to the rest of the world. Once Reiki left Japan, information was either lost or misunderstood which lead to the Reiki we know today being somewhat different to the original form. Jikiden Reiki focuses purely on the treatment of disease. We know this as Chiyoko Yamaguchi learned directly from Hayashi Sensei.
